The Ontario First Nations Technical Services Corporation (OFNTSC) is a nonprofit organization that provides technical advisory services, training, and capacity development to First Nations communities in Ontario.  By offering a wide range of specialized services and expertise, OFNTSC helps to enhance the quality of life, promote self-sufficiency, and foster economic growth within these communities.

 

The Engineer In Training is tasked with operating under the direct oversight of the Director of Engineering & Infrastructure and under the guidance of the Senior Engineer to aid in the Engineering Department's efforts for Ontario’s First Nations. This involves employing supportive approaches to help Ontario’s First Nations effectively implement engineering planning, design, and project management principles and processes in a cost-efficient manner throughout the entire lifespan of community infrastructure.

 

These tasks must be executed in alignment with the culture and values of OFNTSC while maintaining strict confidentiality.

Responsibilities 

  • Serve as a key member of the Engineering Team to drive engineering-related deliverables and services to all First Nations in Ontario.
  • Provide administrative and technical support to Project Engineers and Project Managers on capital projects such as water treatment plants, wastewater treatment plants, infrastructure including roads, buildings, schools, etc.
  • Understand the procedures and protocols in dealing with First Nation communities, government bureaucracies, and agencies.
  • Technical Support may include:
    • Drafting funding submissions for major and minor capital projects;
    • Drafting Terms of Reference for First Nation communities to retain design engineering support, professional project management support, and/or contracting service support;
    • Provide preliminary review and scoring for proposals received in response to call for proposals and or terms of reference;
    • Assisting Engineers and Project Management staff to track and monitor projects from planning to construction and commissioning;
    • Provide preliminary review of consulting engineering designs for various capital projects;
    • Maintain and track change orders, budgets and schedules, project team comments on design drawings as well as Project Team comments on preliminary design drawings;
  • Administrative Support may include:
    • Review and summarize available project funding opportunities for First Nation communities;
    • Update project management software for Engineers and Project Management Staff:
      • Project Schedules
      • Project Budgets
      • Change Orders
    • Participate in various committees as knowledgeable clients for First Nation communities;
    • Assist First Nations with defining & obtaining various funding sources (i.e. ISC, CMHC etc.)

Qualifications

  • Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Civil, Mechanical, or Electrical).
  • Must be eligible for registration as an Engineer-in-Training with the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario.
  • Familiarity with Project Management Software is an asset.
  • Familiarity with GIS Software is an asset.
  • Working knowledge of MS Office Software.
  • Applicants with First Nation, or Inuit will be scored favourably.
  • Applicants under the age of 30 will be scored favourably.

Conditions

  • Some out-of-town traveling is required through the province of Ontario.
  • Valid Ontario Class G driver’s license.

*Priority will be given to First Nations applicants who meet the mandatory requirements.
