Under the supervision of Director of Operations, the Band Representative liaises with all Biinjitiwaabik Zaaging Anishinaabek (BZA) band membership children and families, regardless of location, who involved with Children’s Aid Societies or at risk of being involved with Children’s Aid Societies. The Band Representative will support families who are before the courts; while ensuring that culture, traditions, Indigenous identity and rights of BZA children are protected and preserved by all parties involved in child welfare matters.

Primary Job Responsibilities:

Financial Management

• Understand and follow all financial policies and procedures.

• Provide monthly, quarterly and year budget reports.

• Track and document program related expenses

• Assist with budget monitoring

• Submit expense claims receipts and financial documentation in a timely manner

• Support the procurement of goods and services

• maintain accurate records

• Ensure the compliance of funding requirements

• Safeguard financial information and maintain confidentiality

• Assist in preparing basic financial reports and summaries

Main Responsibilities

• Promote BZA’s mission and ensure all services reflect Indigenous culture, values, and community priorities.

• Provide support to maintain child and family units,

• Advocate for satisfactory solutions to family issues

• Liaise with related service agencies

• Develop a community Band Representative Service Model

• Ensure effective service delivery and monitors service delivery practices guided by relevant strategies to safeguard children who are members of BZA and who are involved with child welfare agencies have their rights as Indigenous people to their own culture, community and identity, protected and adhered to

• Maintain a good knowledge of the Child, Youth and Family Services Act, the regulations, policies and procedures, Traditional Customary Care, Kinship Care as options rather than apprehension

• Ability to meet with and communicate with Chief and Council for the planning of child and family service plans

• Ensure BZA band members are aware of their inherent rights to their children

• Coordinate community case conferences with all community services involved to monitor and provide input into the child and family plan of care

• Ensure client files are maintained and updated on a regular basis

• Report to the Director of Operations and Chief and Council as directed

• Ensure confirmation that the child is a member of BZA and research history of child and family in relation to BZA

• Liaise with community resources

• Attend all case review meetings with representatives of the parties

• Monitor status of the child and family

• Assist in the development of objectives and goals for children and families and ensure child and family input is incorporated into the Family Plan of Care

Relationships

• Demonstrate respectful behavior and actions aligned with the culture and values of BZA.

• Maintain respectful and professional relationships with all personnel appropriate to an education institute which provides services to children.

• Be respectful and unbiased in carrying out your work responsibilities.

• Promote, provide, and practice a positive work environment aligned with the culture and values of BZA.

Performs other duties and responsibilities as necessary in the performance of the position and as assigned by Supervisor.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Knowledge Indigenous banned administration processes

• familiarity with relevant legislation and policies

• awareness of community priorities challenges and opportunities

• basic knowledge of conflict resolution and community engagement practices

• understanding of confidentiality and privacy requirements

• Effective oral and written communication skills.

• Good time management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and pay attention to schedules.

• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Education:

Minimum Two (2) year Social Services Worker (SSW) or Child and Youth Worker (CYW) diploma or diploma/degree in the human services field is required.

Experience:

• Minimum Two (2) year Social Services Worker (SSW) or Child and Youth Worker (CYW) diploma or diploma/degree in the human services field is required.

• Willingness to acquire professional requirements.
