The Regional Energy Champion (REC) will serve as the central capacity-building resource for participating First Nations. The REC provides training, mentorship, coordination, and technical support to Community Energy Champions (CECs), while strengthening regional collaboration, knowledge sharing, and long-term energy readiness, with a particular focus on energy efficiency.

The Regional Energy Champion reduces administrative burden on communities, increases access to energy-efficiency programs and incentives, and supports First Nation-led energy planning and implementation across the region. The REC acts as trainer, mentor, and regional hub for CECs, ensuring consistent support and collaborative problem-solving.

1. CEC Support & Training

Serve as primary mentor and support for Community Energy Champions across participating communities

Hold regular 1:1 and group check-ins with CECs; troubleshoot barriers and share practical tools

Guide CECs on workplan development, tracking, project delivery, and reporting

Coordinate and deliver CEC training sessions (virtual and in-person) tailored to community needs

Encourage networking among the regional CECs for relationship-building and technical support

Support financial tracking to each CEC as required 

2. Regional Energy Network Development

Facilitate peer learning among CECs through quarterly collaboration sessions and resource sharing

Help plan and deliver regional gatherings/workshops and ensure continuity beyond the pilot

3. Program Coordination & Reporting

Track activities, milestones, and outcomes; contribute to required reporting

Identify gaps, risks, and continuous improvement opportunities throughout the pilot

 

Required

Experience working with First Nations or Indigenous communities (energy, housing, infrastructure, sustainability, or related)

Strong facilitation, relationship-building, and communication skills

Experience supporting or mentoring staff or community-based roles

Willingness and ability to travel regionally

Preferred

Experience with community energy planning, energy efficiency, or climate-related programs

Familiarity with energy-related funding programs including IESO / Save on Energy (or similar) programs and associated reporting

Project Management experience

Lived experience as a First Nations community member

Experience designing and delivering training or workshops

College or University education is considered an asset 

Core Competencies

Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite

Relationship-centred and community-driven approach

Ability to translate technical information into practical, accessible guidance

Strong organizational and coordination skills

Comfort working independently within a supported team environment
