How You’ll Support the Team  In this role, you will:

• Supervise the direction and day-to-day operation of the Plans Examination & Zoning Unit.  

Ensure that plans examination and zoning services are provided in an efficient and effective manner and ensure compliance with the Ontario Building Code and other applicable legislation.  

Serve as the Deputy Chief Building Official for the City of Thunder Bay and act as the Chief Building Official in the absence of the Manager. 

Maintain thorough knowledge of legislation, regulations and by-laws governing building construction. 

Assist the Supervisor - Inspections with the administration of the City’s Backflow Prevention Program in accordance with the Waterworks By-law. 

Assist the Manager and Supervisor - Inspections with support for the Vacant and Dilapidated Building Program including the implementation, administration, and coordination of the program. 

Participate with the Manager in planning and implementing short- and long-range goals and objectives, projects, and work priorities. 

Supervise Unit staff including staff development, performance management/review, coaching/mentoring, health and safety, collective agreement administration, discipline and termination decisions. 

Develop, administer, and maintain Unit procedures consistent with Corporate and Departmental objectives. 

Prepare information, reports, letters and memoranda for the Manager.  

 

Here’s what will help you succeed as the Supervisor, Plans Examination: 

Degree in a building construction-related discipline and registration as a professional engineer, architect, engineering or architectural technician or technologist together with three years workrelated experience; or 

Diploma in a building construction-related discipline and registration as a professional engineer, architect, engineering or architectural technician or technologist together with five years work-related experience 

Successfully completed the examination program “Powers and Duties of Chief Building Official 

” as administered or authorized by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing 

Three (3) Experience in a supervisory capacity 

Demonstrated knowledge of the various components of human resource management 

Knowledge of and ability to interpret applicable municipal by-laws, provincial legislation and related regulations; specifically, the Ontario Building Code Act and its regulations, and other construction codes and standards
