PUBLIC LEGAL EDUCATION & COMMUNICATIONS COORDINATOR

Thunder Bay, ON

The Public Legal Education and Communications Coordinator (PLECO) is responsible for delivering on NALSC’s mandate to offer PLE to NAN communities through workshops and presentations, community visits, career fairs, clinic days, promotions and booth displays, newsletters and website information, and radio shows. The PLECO works under the Director of Legal Services and Legal Aid Administrator and all aspects and programs of NALSC. The PLECO will also assist the Director of Legal Services, Legal Aid Administrator and NALSC with administrative duties including procurement, research, record-keeping and more.

Qualifications:
• Postsecondary degree or diploma in communications, marketing, public relations, or a related field
• Knowledge of Indigenous culture including an understanding of the history and justice related issues
• Knowledge of NALSC programs
• Ability to work co-operatively and constructively as part of a team
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to interact effectively with staff at all levels of government, other legal professions and the general public
• Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to make sound decisions
• Knowledge of the criminal justice system and its components
• Excellent organizational and time management skills
• Experience with Microsoft Office (including Word, Excel and Outlook) or equivalent applications
• Experience working with NAN and in First Nation Communities
• Excellent case and file management skills, administrative and coordination skills, stress management and time management skills, ability tomeet deadlines.
• Ability to speak Cree, Oji-Cree, or Ojibway an asset.

Benefits:

Nih Keewaywin-My Journey Back Home and Talking Together is funded by the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services. The purpose of the project is to provide a traditional/alternative Circle approach to resolving youth facing crisis and who are at-risk including violence, human-trafficking, homelessness, drug-addiction, mental-health, lack of education, legal issues, lack of life skills, basic needs, child welfare and those who have lost their path in their life cycle journey. The Talking Circle is used to empower youth to arrive at safe and acceptable resolutions to their at-risk matters. Circles are arranged and conducted by a Talking Together Facilitator.

Qualifications:
• Ability to speak the language and knowledge of culture an asset.
• Experience and knowledge of the legal system is an asset
• This position requires at a minimum a secondary school diploma with related work experience.
• It is preferred that the TTF hold a post-secondary degree or diploma in social work, child and family worker program, mental health or related fields
• Experience working with NAN and in First Nation Communities
• Excellent communication skills both oral and written.
• Some travel may be required.

The Victim Witness Liaison program is mandated to improve the quality of services to crime victims and witnesses of crime. The Victim Witness worker assists victims and witnesses of all ages in dealing with consequences of victimization and helps them through the criminal justice process.

S/he acts as support, ensures immediate needs are addressed such as safety, referring to
appropriate resources, assists victims and witnesses with the court process and/or to participate in a restorative justice process and liaises with appropriate agencies and service organizations.

Qualifications:
• Education or experience in social work, mental health, paralegal, or related field
• Ability to counsel/relate to people with emotional situations
• Experience with the Euro-Canadian legal system and knowledge of Aboriginal justice systems
• Experience in program management and planning
• Ability to work in a cross-cultural environment
• Computer skills using MS Word
