AFTERCARE WORKER

(External Posting, Term Contract – Ending March 31, 2027)

‘My Journey Back Home’ project is funded by the Ministry of MCCSS. The purpose of the project is to utilize a traditional/alternative justice approach to assist youth facing crisis, violence, human-trafficking, homelessness, drug addiction, mental health, lack of education, legal issues, lack of life skills, basic needs and who have lost their path in their life cycle journey. The process used is the Circle in order to empower youth to arrive at acceptable resolutions. Circles are arranged and conducted by a Facilitator.

Qualifications:
• This position requires at a minimum a secondary school diploma with related work experience.
• It is preferred that the Aftercare Worker hold a post-secondary degree or diploma in social work, child and family worker program, mental health or related fields
• Experience and knowledge of the legal system is an asset. Ability to engage people to build trust and rapport; effective verbal and listening communication skills specifically in conflict resolution and nonviolent crisis intervention; excellent interviewing and counselling skills
• Excellent case and file management skills, administrative and coordination skills, stress management and time management skills, ability to meet deadlines
• Offer crisis intervention and de-escalation for people who have multiple and complex needs, including homelessness, lack of access to services/supports, ill-health, mental illness, substance misuse, trauma and violence, discrimination, cognitive impairment, etc.
• knowledge of the resources in the community for individuals, youth and families who are homeless, at risk of homelessness, living in poverty, or living with mental health or addiction issues ability to integrate harm reduction approaches as appropriate in interactions with the client
• Excellent communication skills both oral and written.
• Proficient working knowledge of MS Office Software, internet, and general office equipment
• Ability to speak Cree, Oji-Cree, Ojibway an asset.

Location: Thunder Bay, ON
Hours: Full Time – Contract (35 Hours Per Week)
Starting Salary: $50,140 Annually

The Gladue Caseworker is responsible for assisting Indigenous persons we serve in fulfilling the recommendations made in a Gladue report written on their behalf. The Gladue Caseworker will provide direct services and make necessary referrals to programs and services in the community to ensure the clients receive services in a timely fashion.

Qualifications:
• Preferred Community College diploma, University degree or equivalent in Social Services and/or a minimum of 5 years work in a social or justice services environment.
• Knowledge of the judicial system, Criminal Code, and other related federal and provincial statutes, and related court decisions regarding Indigenous persons.
• Knowledge of Indigenous culture and experience working with Indigenous persons; understanding of the northern cultural environment
• Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and/or weekends.
• A clear criminal reference check (CPIC) and Vulnerable Sector Clearance will be a condition of employment
• Must have a valid Ontario driver’s license and reliable transportation.

YOUTH INTERVENTION WORKER

The Youth Intervention Worker will play an important role in developing the local program and assisting young persons integrate into the community in a positive and meaningful way. To facilitate this process, the YIW will assist in the development of plans for special activities, individualized work placements and/or restitution activities and will monitor and supervise these plans towards their successful completion.

Qualifications:
• Experience and knowledge of Indigenous issues and the current legal system.
• Excellent communication skills both oral and written.
• Have a genuine interest in seeing Youth develop and succeed.
• Proficient working knowledge of MS Office Software, internet, and general office equipment
• Travel will be required
• Ability to speak Oji-Cree, Cree or Ojibway is an asset.

Duties and Responsibilities
• Liaise with court, police, judges, and probation officers to arrange for referrals to divert charges to RJC.
• Attend Restorative Justice Circles as a resource person or facilitate Restorative Justice Circles when needed.
• Assist in the development of plans for special activities, individualized work placements and/or restitution activities in meetings with the case manager, and other relevant stakeholders.
• Ensure that all clients report according to the terms of their orders.
• Follow-up on any counseling or referrals required as per supervision plans, deferred custody orders, and report progress to the case manager.
• Identify any areas of concern, or non-compliance with program participation to the individual youth’s supervising Probation Officer immediately.
• The worker will be required to facilitate the HUB programming and community presentations when asked.
