The Staff Lawyer is under the direction, and reports to the Director of Legal Services. The Staff Lawyer is responsible for providing high quality legal services to Nishnawbe-Aski Nation community members and complies with necessary reporting and legislative requirements. The Staff Lawyer is responsible for providing legal services in accordance with the NAN Legal mandate, vision, mission, and principles.

Qualifications:
• Must be a lawyer, called to the Bar in Ontario, with relevant experience in Criminal law, Family law, and administrative matters and understanding of Indigenous law and justice.
• Must have a membership in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
• Excellent case and file management skills, administrative and coordination skills, stress management and time management skills, ability to meet deadlines.
• Ability to engage people to build trust and rapport; effective verbal and listening communication skills specifically in conflict resolution and nonviolent crisis intervention; excellent interviewing and counselling skills.
• Experience working within the Canadian legal system and knowledge of Indigenous justice issues would be an asset.
• Proficient working knowledge of SharePoint/PeopleSoft, MS Office Software, Internet, and general office equipment
• knowledge of the legal resources in the community for individuals, youth, and families
• Ability to speak the language or knowledge of NAN First Nation languages an asset.

The Community Justice Navigator and Legal Education Officer (CJNLEO) is a community-based position located in a Nishnawbe-Aski Nation (NAN) community. CJNLEOs are responsible for assisting NAN communities with the coordination and set up of Starlink systems and associated equipment for fly-in courts and Justice system use. The CJNLEO will also work closely with NALSC Public Legal Education to provide education materials, program/workshops and general knowledge regarding Justice System and general legal education.

Qualifications:
• High School diploma and some previous education or training in law related field.
• Good understanding of the NALSC programs and services
• Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous people, Indigenous culture, traditions and justice system
• Project management and organizational communications.
• Experience and knowledge of the legal system is an asset.
• Experience working with NAN and in First Nation Communities
• Excellent communication skills both oral and written.
• Proficient working knowledge of MS Office Software, internet, and general office
equipment
• Ability to speak Cree, Oji-Cree, or Ojibway an asset.

PAYROLL OFFICER

The Payroll Officer is responsible for collecting, verifying, maintaining, and processing accurate payroll information for NALSC. The Payroll Officer calculates pay and benefit entitlements for employees, distributes payment statements and responds to employee questions regarding taxes, deductions, and employee benefits. The Payroll Officer will also support other Finance personnel and HR department as needed.

Qualifications:
• College or University Education in Business Administration, Accounting or Finance
• Payroll Compliance (PCP) or Certified Payroll Manager (CMP) is preferred
• 3-5 years related Payroll Experience
• Knowledge of Accounting and Payroll procedures
• Familiarity with Labour Legislations
• Advance mathematical skills and a strong attention to detail
• Excellent administrative, interpersonal, communication, word processing, and file management skills
• Ability to process payments and resolve payroll issues in a timely manner

Under the direction of the Gladue Manager, the Gladue Writer will prepare Gladue Reports for Nishnawbe-Aski Nation (NAN) members in the court system process in accordance with the Gladue sentencing principles as per section 718.2(e) of the Criminal Code. The Gladue Reports provide the courts with a comprehensive picture of an Aboriginal offender’s life circumstances and systemic barriers. This information is gathered by interviewing the offender and corroborating the life circumstances of the offender by interviewing third parties, such as family, extended family, and community members.

Qualifications:
• Post-secondary education in Law, Criminal Justice, Social Work, or related work experience in the justice field;
• Coordinate the facilitation of the Gladue Report;
• Ability to research primary and secondary sources for historical discourse for Gladue
Reports;
• Experience working in courts, Gladue Writing, and restorative justice programs will be
considered an asset;
• Knowledge of the judicial process, Criminal Code, and other related federal and provincial statutes, and related court decisions regarding Aboriginal persons;
• Self-motivated individual with the ability to work with minimal supervision;
• Exceptional writing skills;
• Effective interviewing skills;
• Ability to interact with clients, build rapport and trust, effective verbal and listening
skills;
• Able to work under pressure and meet deadlines;
• Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends;
• Proficient working knowledge of MS Office Software, internet, and general office
equipment
• Ability to speak Cree, Oji-Cree, or Ojibway an asset.
