Wasauksing First Nation is accepting applications for a First Nation Child and Family

Services Band Advocate. Under the direction of the Supervisor of Social Programming

and Wellness, the Wasauksing First Nation Child and Family Services Band Advocate is a

highly motivated individual with exceptional advocacy skills, possessing critical

knowledge of the Child, Youth and Family Services Act (Ontario), Part IV. The

Wasauksing First Nation Child and Family Services Band Advocate acts on behalf of

Wasauksing First Nation as a party under the Child, Youth and Family Services Act to

advocate for the safety and wellbeing of children and families affiliated with Wasauksing

First Nation and involved with Child Welfare Agencies, both on and off reserve. The

Wasauksing First Nation Child and Family Services Band Advocate ensures that the rights

of children and their families are respected throughout the planning process and court

proceedings and works to ensure a culturally appropriate disposition of the case.

Provides support to Wasauksing First Nation families involved in Child Welfare

matters.

? Accompanies Child Welfare agencies during investigations and home visits ?

Develops relationships with families, youth and children and support agencies

? Assists with the development and implementation of a Service Plan, in which all

parties agree regarding family and child welfare services such as

recommendations for placement, family mediation, access visits, home visits,

repatriation, counselling, treatment, Plans of Care and cultural support

? Ensures that Wasauksing First Nation families are fully aware of their rights and

understand the child and family service system

? Advocates to maintain family units and community and cultural ties

? Provides culturally based support and education to child(ren) and family

? Presents Wasauksing First Nation's interests in Child Protection proceedings or

hearings.

? Meets with family, child welfare workers and lawyers when required to support

court proceedings

? Communicates with Band Representatives and/or Managers to support and

provide input and feedback on proposals for Plans of Care

? Assists with and supports the preparation of statements outlining Wasauksing

First Nations' position on case proceedings

? Provides all parties involved with the family monthly updates on the progress of current and past services and programs

? Attends settlement conferences as set out by new Court Rules if required

? Establishes and maintains an active working relationship with all Child, Youth and Family Services agencies and other First Nation Band Advocates

? Attends team meetings and collaborates with the Wasauksing First Nation Health and Social Services Team to support families, youth and children

? Stays up to date on support services available for families, youth and children

Education & Experience:

? Minimum post-secondary university degree in Social Work, Social Science, or a related field

? In good standing with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers or other applicable governing bodies is an asset

? Note: Completion of the First Nation Child Welfare Advocate (FNCWA) Certificate Program through the Anishinabek Educational Institute at Canadore College will be a requirement within the first year of hire

? Minimum three years of experience working with a First Nation community in the social services field

? Direct experience working with Indigenous families, youth and children

Other Requirements:

? Valid Driver's License and reliable personal vehicle

? Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and/or weekends

? Available for on-call after hours and during weekends as required

? Ability to travel is required, and to travel with minimal notice

? This position requires the individual to work with various families, youth and children. To protect children, youth and vulnerable persons, Wasauksing First Nation requires the individual to provide a vulnerable sector check
