The Thunder Bay Museum seeks an intern with some knowledge and experience in digitalization of records that will be trained to use film projection, recording, scanning equipment, and software to digitize and catalog reel-to-reel film, magnetic tape records, still photographs, negatives, and documents.  Interns once trained will use those skills to work with staff, volunteers, and the Museum’s partners (ShebaFilms / Friends of the Finnish Labour Temple) on the Reel Memories of the Lakehead Project.

PRIMARY JOB DUTIES (Training to be provided):

1. Handling and preservation of reel-to-reel film, audio tape, and other formats;

2. Digitalization and cataloging of archival audio/visual media to archival standards;

3. Digital media editing;

4. Archival research;

5. Digital archival practices;

6. Database management;

7. Social media and writing skills. 

1. Skilled in productivity software (Adobe, Microsoft);

2. Be enrolled in or have completed some or all of postsecondary education related to history museums, or a related field;

3. Ontario Class G Drivers License.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

1. Identify as an Indigenous person, including First Nation, Metis, or Inuit.

2. Are new entrants into the work force, are transitioning to a new career, or the unemployed or underemployed who are entering a new field;

3. Have not previously participated in a NOHFC-funded internship;

4. Are at least 18 years of age; and

5. Reside, and be legally entitled to work, in Canada.

6. May be required to travel to various work locations and provide own transportation;

7. Must sign a confidentiality agreement.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

1. Physical Demands: This position involves physical exertion produced by the incumbent in carrying out the responsibilities of the position beyond a standard office environment. The position requires the occasional ability to lift 22 kg above one’s head, crawling, crouching, climbing, and lifting, carrying, and manual labor related tasks. It also involves extended time sitting, walking, and standing.

2. Environmental Conditions: This includes conditions in the work environment that have potential for negative physical impact on the incumbent. Areas of the job location are potentially dirty (including but not limited to allergens, irritants, toxins, and animal waste), loud noises, and temperature extremes from -40° C to 35° C. The incumbent may be required to wear PPE (personal protective equipment) to mitigate these risks.

3. Sensory Demands: Sensory demands are an intense; incumbents will be required to use touch, smell, sight, and hearing to perform their duties on a regular basis.

4. Mental Demands: Mental demands indicate psychological impacts that are an unavoidable part of the job and place increased mental demands on the incumbent.
