The Keeper of the Land Youth Intern will assist the Friendship Centre Teams in the delivery of multiple environmental programs and services, including land-based and water-based activities, recycling initiatives, and conservation-related projects. The Keeper of the Land Youth Intern will assist with the provision of culturally appropriate, environmentally protective community support services to Indigenous children, youth, families, and seniors/elders.

    Duties: RESPONSIBILITIES:
                                                       1. Assist in the development and implementation of environmental stewardship programming:
  • Help plan and implement activities that support environmental awareness and protection, land- and water-based initiatives, and conservation-related programming.
  • Assist in preparation of nutritious snacks and lunches
  • Provide adequate equipment, resources, and activities relevant to programs 
  • Ensure equipment and the facility are clean, well maintained and safe at all times
  • Provide weekly and monthly schedules of activities
  • Develop culturally appropriate programs and activities                                                                                                                                                                                       

                                                          2. Supervise participants in the programs: 

  • Ensure participants are supervised at all times 
  • Provide various experiences and activities for children and youth that encourage recycling, reducing litter, and protecting land and water
  • Clearly and effectively communicate in a manner that participants understand and that engages service users

                                                          3. Maintain program administration:

  • Assist with collection of statistical data, including maintaining attendance records and recording individual contacts with participants
  • Provide promotional support for program
  • Provide clerical support, including purchase orders, photocopying, and faxing
  • Complete day-to-day administrative tasks i.e. time sheets, etc.

                                                          4. Community Development & Outreach:

  • Attend relevant meetings, conferences or workshops as a representative of the Friendship Centre
  • Promote the program and services provided by the Thunder Bay Indigenous Friendship Centre
  • Respond to general enquiries of the Friendship Centre's purpose, processes and procedures and/or any other information being requested
  • Research appropriate agencies for relevant referrals, resources and available community programs
  • Develop promotional material that advertises services and upcoming events

                                                           5. Training and Professional Development:

  • Participate in relevant conferences, training workshops and related courses and meetings for professional development as required or directed.
  • Attend workshops, staff meetings, etc. as directed.                                                                                                                                                                                          

                                                          6. Health & Safety:

  •  Observe health, fire and safety regulations; uphold health and safety standards. 
  • Ensure that the Health and Safety policies incorporated into daily working practices are adhered to.
  • Maintain Standard First Aid Level C with AED certification.
  • Maintain Safe Food Handling certification.                                                                                                                                                                                                         

                                                          7. General Duties:

  • Perform other duties relevant to the Friendship Centre as assigned.
  • Notify supervisor immediately of any personnel difficulties, crises or other issues that may affect the daily operations of the Friendship Centre.
  • Ensure client files are secured in a locked filing cabinet on a daily basis
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Work cooperatively with others to actively foster and promote organizational team building, networking, and support mechanisms.
    Qualifications:
  • Preferred secondary or postsecondary student with keen interest in environmental stewardship and social activism. Knowledge of Indigenous culture, land and water-based teachings, and experience working with Indigenous persons.
  • Knowledge of an Indigenous language(s) will be considered an asset. 
  • Related work /volunteer experience working with children and families is an asset.
  • Must have a thorough knowledge of available community resources related to environmental supports and services. 
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • High level of organizational and planning skills.
  • Working knowledge of computer software packages.
  • Ability to problem solve and take initiative. 
  • Ability to work flexible hours, possibly evenings and/or weekends.
  • A clear Vulnerable Sector Clearance will be a condition of the employment offer.
  • Must have reliable transportation.
