Education Navigator

Nokiiwin Tribal Council requires an experienced, knowledgeable, motivated and career-minded Education Navigator. The Education Navigator will work closely with the education staff and leadership of three Nokiiwin member communities to develop new Regional Education Agreements to govern the education funding relationship between these communities and the Government of Canada. These agreements are an important part of restoring the jurisdiction of Indigenous communities in Canada on education

  • Consult with all appropriate sources to learn what should be in a Regional Education Agreemen
  • Examine the individual circumstances of the participating First Nations in order to be able to find other First Nations in similar situations and discover best practices
  • Research legal and financial requirements
  • Develop connections with subject matter experts and stakeholders
  • Prepare reports on findings Information Sharing
  • Synthesize research results and prioritize information to share with First Nations
  • Bring relevant staff and leadership from First Nations together to present information related to Regional Education Agreements
  • Connect First Nations staff and leadership with relevant subject matter experts and stakeholders as appropriate
  • Answer questions from First Nations staff and leadership Agreement Development and Negotiation
  • As directed by participating First Nations, draft a Regional Education Agreement(s) that meets community needs
  • Negotiate with the Government of Canada and/or other parties
  • Have agreements reviewed by lawyers and other experts at appropriate times
  • Update community staff and leadership on progress of negotiations at regular intervals
  • Arrange a signing ceremony upon successful conclusion of the negotiations Budget Management
  • Manage the overall budget of the project and maintain appropriate documentation
  • Develop contracts for legal and other expert consultants, manage terms of the contract once approved
  • Assess performance of contractors
  • Follow Nokiiwin Finance Policy and Procedures
  • Other Duties as assigned by the Executive Director or designate.
  • Possess a university degree in Education, Business, Public Administration or a related field, or a post secondary degree/diploma with a sufficient combination of training and experience
  • A minimum of 5 years experience working in First Nations education or administration
  • Knowledge of funding relationships between governments, First Nations, and provincial school boards
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation and regulations
  • Strong writing, communications, and planning skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work interpedently under tight deadlines
  • Ability to travel and work in Nokiiwin communities
  • Must be computer literate in Microsoft Office
  • Fluency in Anishinaabe, knowledge and appreciation of Anishinaabe culture and heritage are assets
  • Valid Driver's License and current satisfactory
  • Criminal Reference Check is required
