Alternative Learning Teacher

Under the direction of the Executive Director and in co-operation with Biigtigong Nishnaabeg (Pic River) Private High School, the incumbent will provide services within an alternative continuing education model serving both on-reserve and off-reserve for those working on their Ontario Secondary School Diploma credits. The incumbent will ensure that the School's Program and curricula are implemented in a way that maximizes student-learning experiences. They will plan, organize and implement an appropriate instructional program in a learning environment that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential. The teacher is responsible for the supervision and evaluation of all students within his/her teaching assignment. Working collaboratively with a team of educational professionals, the individual will demonstrate a strong commitment to the planning for improvement process in support of student achievement.

The role includes but not limited to, working with staff, committees, stakeholders and clients for a wide variety of duties to: • Instructs students, using various teaching methods, for example lecture and demonstration, and uses audiovisual aids and other materials to supplement presentations. • Prepares course objectives and outline for course of study following curriculum guidelines or requirements of region and school. • Assigns lessons and corrects homework. • Administers tests to evaluate students' progress, records results, and issues reports to inform parents of progress. • Keep and maintain attendance records, and follow up with principal and guardians, as needed. • Meets with staff to discuss student progress and problems. • Instruct and monitor students in the use of learning materials and equipment. • Update all necessary records accurately and completely as required by laws, district policies and school regulations. • Keep up to date with developments in subject area, teaching resources and methods and make relevant changes to instructional plans and activities. • Participate in department and school meetings, parent meetings. • Deal tactfully with staff, students, and the public
Qualifications: Bachelor of Arts or Science Degree and a Bachelor of Education Degree from an accredited institution, or equivalent. Member in good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers. Junior/Intermediate or Intermediate/Senior Qualifications preferred but will consider other divisional qualifications with a combination of experience. Experience in outdoor based education and service delivery of labour market programs; or a combination of education & training with minimum of 1 year related work experience in labour market program delivery. Knowledge and appreciation of Anishinabe culture and heritage are assets.
